Quiet the Noise. The Surprising Power of Taking a Break from Social Media.

PREFACE:

This is the second article in our Mode Healthcare series inspired by the Lululemon Global Wellbeing Report 2024. As we navigate modern pressures to optimise every corner of our lives, we're examining the quiet, often counterintuitive rituals that actually help. Less noise. More substance

In a world designed to keep us connected, why do so many of us feel so... overwhelmed?
The average adult spends over 2.5 hours a day on social media. We log in for connection, inspiration, or news, but often leave feeling wired, distracted, and strangely empty. It’s not just anecdotal.

According to Lululemon’s global report, people who take regular breaks from social media report a 9% increase in their overall wellbeing.

That’s not marginal. That’s meaningful.

The feedback loop of fatigue. Much like sugar or caffeine, social media offers short-term stimulation with long-term cost. The brain doesn’t easily distinguish between a real threat and a passive scroll through curated perfection. Over time, even passive use can heighten anxiety, reduce focus, and subtly erode our sense of self.

It’s also a conduit for comparison—one of the report’s key drivers of wellbeing burnout. When we constantly see others “thriving,” it’s easy to feel like we’re not doing enough. That pressure, often invisible, adds up. Quietly. Daily.

THE GIFT OF ABSENCE

Taking a break from social media isn’t about digital detoxes or performative sabbaticals. It’s about choosing presence. Reclaiming attention. Giving your nervous system time to settle. Whether it’s a weekend offline, muting certain accounts, or deleting the apps entirely—research shows even modest steps improve mental clarity, sleep, and emotional resilience.

WHAT WE SEE AT MODE

We often speak with patients who feel “stuck” or “foggy”—and while the cause isn’t always digital, screen overload plays a bigger role than many realise. We help patients track and balance their daily rhythms: light, movement, food, mood, and screen time. It’s less about restriction, more about relationship. Your phone can be a tool. But it shouldn't be your compass.

At Mode, we believe clarity is a cornerstone of health.
We help patients build nervous system resilience through personalised treatment, natural therapies, and simple daily rituals that create space for the good stuff to grow. If you’re feeling scattered, stressed or overstimulated, start with a conversation.

At Mode, we’re redefining what it means to feel well.

Rooted in natural therapies and backed by science, we treat the human—not just the symptom. Whether you're feeling stuck, stressed, or simply ready to take your health seriously, our care team is here to guide you gently forward.

We have clinics in Bunbury, Dunsborough, Perth, Bangalow and nationally with our Telehealth Clinic.
